Murray Coleman

Resource Development Division Director, United Way of the Midlands

Raised in Columbia, United Way’s Murray Coleman is no stranger to Five Points. His first memory was at the Elbow Room and seeing Hootie and the Blowfish in their prime. “We were the youngest kids there but we knew every word,” Coleman remembers fondly.  Although he didn’t attend college in Columbia, whenever he was home for the holidays, Five Points was always where he and his friends would catch up or watch football. Today, you can still find him trying to get to get his friends’ signature back table at Groucho’s.

Five Points may grow and it may not look like it was when you were here, but it always represents home.

In his eyes, one big sign of Five Points’ growth is the amount of events the district houses each year. “From Chili Cook-Off to St. Pat’s in Five Points, to the different times they dye the fountain during the year, you can find something for everyone there.” Coleman feels that although Five Points has already come a long way in 100 years, the district is poised to do another 100. He believes Five Points is timeless, and ever growing and he’s very thankful to be a part of the tradition.
